Traditional Arts & Music Camp
The highly popular Traditional Arts and Music YAM Camps (TAM YAM Camps) are held two weeks each year during the month of July and invite rising 3rd – rising 9th graders. Students receive intensive music instruction during the morning sessions and enjoy traditional Appalachian arts activities during the afternoon, such as pottery, stained glass, chair caning, Appalachian Dance, etc.
These camps are so full of traditional arts and serve to engender a love and appreciation of them in the younger generation as children desire to return to camp year after year. Through attending TAM YAM Camps, many students decide to sign up for one of our other programs to continue to enjoy music instruction throughout the year.
Sweet Potato Pie Kids
Sweet Potato Pie Kids (SPPK) are selected through an audition process to become members of the YAM showcase performing band. Their purpose is to promote the YAM Program throughout the community. They book performances for community, church, and civic events. After transitioning out of the band, many go on to form their own bands, become instructors, or use their talents in other ways to continue to appreciate Appalachian Music.
The band meets the need for performances within the community and represents our YAM Program well. It also serves as an inspiration for other students to aspire to become a member of this performing band.
Our Programs
The YAM Afterschool Program
The YAM Afterschool Program is made possible by a partnership with the School District of Pickens County. YAM lessons are held immediately after the school day ends at the local schools. The program begins the first week in October and ends the 3rd week in March. In 2023-2024 there were approximately 400 students in the After-School program.
This eliminates the need for transportation to a lesson site and allows the student to flow right into his/her lesson. A homework center is also provided while a student is waiting for class to begin. Lessons are presented at an affordable price for all and provide enrichment to the student in the most convenient means, giving them a sense of accomplishment, and providing a lifelong skill.
Evening Music Program
The YAM Evening Music Program is available to children, 3rd grade and up, and also to adults of any age, of any skill level, and classes are offered year-round. Children and adults are served in their separate classes, and sites are strategically placed throughout the counties. Locations are in Pickens, Easley, Six Mile, Liberty, and Salem.
The Evening Program meets the needs of children unable to attend the Afterschool Program, but who can attend one of the Evening Programs. This also meets the needs of adults who would also like to learn to play a stringed instrument by ear or to perfect their skill if they already play. The Evening Program serves to provide a sense of community for its students and is very popular with homeschool students and parents.
Our Impact
We are an inclusive organization known to be authentic, vibrant, supportive and welcoming to people of all ages and background willing to learn.
Our most impactful achievement is the transformative effect on the lives of the children we serves. Many alumni have become influential artists, shining a spotlight on Appalachian music traditions both regionally and nationally. Several alumni now serve as instructors, while others have formed professional bands, produced albums, composed original songs, and actively participate in festivals, fundraisers, and community events, including performances at local churches and public service events.
Our alumni have competed in prestigious events such as the Fiddlers Convention at Hagood Mill, Fiddlers Grove, NC, Galax, VA, and the Wayne Henderson Festival, and represented the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) on tour in Europe. Others have served on national traditional music councils, with one alumni presiding as IBMA Council President. Notable achievements include performances on America’s Got Talent and American Idol, magazine cover features, and apprenticeships with the South Carolina Arts Commission. Recently, one alum performed on the Grand Ole Opry stage.
The YAM Program fosters not only musical talent but also develops soft skills, community engagement and leadership. Our students often go on to lead in their colleges and communities, continuing the cycle of giving back. Many have earned scholarships to universities at East Tennessee State, Mars Hill University, and Belmont University to further their musical careers. Some have even formed bluegrass bands within their schools, such as Clemson University's Tigertown Roots.
